A new era of WWE 2K awaits

WWE 2K15 marked a major transitional moment for the franchise, being the first title to debut on modern consoles. Developed by Visual Concepts and Yuke’s, it aimed to offer a more realistic wrestling experience by overhauling gameplay systems and heavily focusing on presentation improvements, making a leap in terms of gameplay and graphics from the series.

WWE 2K15 adds a few new gameplay twists that could indicate the direction future refinements may take. This includes a grapple mechanic, that has you take part in a rock-paper-scissor style mini game and a revamp of the same precise grapple, strike, counter mechanics.

The main event

WWE 2K15 moves toward simulation-based wrestling. Matches unfold at a slower, more deliberate pace, with a new chain grappling system that adds layers of realism to early match moments. Stamina management also plays a major role, forcing players to conserve energy and think more strategically about their moves. However, the game can feel sluggish at times. Moreover, the creation suite was dramatically stripped down, disappointing players who loved customizing wrestlers, arenas, and storylines.

The Showcase Mode is the game's highlight, featuring two rivalries (John Cena vs. CM Punk and Triple H vs. Shawn Michaels) presented with historical footage and dedicated story-driven matches. While these storylines are well-crafted, the overall amount of content is lacking. Many fan-favorite match types like Create-A-Story and Custom Soundtracks are missing, and the roster feels slim compared to previous entries. Moreover, The MyCareer mode is repetitive and lacks meaningful branching choices.

Graphical and gameplay leap

Visually, WWE 2K15 was a huge leap forward at release. Character models boast impressive detail, realistic sweat and fatigue effects appear during longer matches, and arena lighting is more authentic than ever. Entrances and animations were also improved to feel closer to the actual TV broadcasts. The commentary, while featuring a larger variety of lines from Jerry Lawler and Michael Cole, still struggles with repetition and lack of excitement during key moments.

Performance-wise, the game runs smoothly on new-gen consoles, but occasional bugs and awkward animation transitions are still present. Additionally, WWE 2K14’s campaign of 29 years' worth of lore is removed from this year’s story. This year that mode has been replaced by two rivalry story lines: Degeneration X’s collapse, and Cena and CM Punks blowout which made the previous campaign more appealing to those who wish for a more rounded career mode.  (until the mod community gets their hands on it at least).

My final problem WWE 2K15 is that in the time since it came to console, story lines in the show have moved on considerably. Thus, characters in the game seem oddly misplaced compared to their current standing. Take Cesaro, who is given a rating of 93 (one of the highest in the game) but is currently languishing in the tag-team division with Tyson Kid. The one plus side to this is that CM Punk still puts in an appearance – straight edge fans take note, this will probably be the last time he appears in a WWE game roster.

A step forward, but not without stumbles

WWE 2K15 brings a bold shift toward realism with improved visuals, slower-paced gameplay, and a strong Showcase Mode. While it marks a technical leap for the series, it stumbles with reduced content, a stripped-down creation suite, and a lackluster MyCareer mode. It sets a new foundation for future titles, but longtime fans may find it lacking in depth and variety.
